What’s On in Istria in May and June 2026: The Reasons You’ve Been Waiting For

If you’re looking for Istria events in May 2026, you’ve picked the right time to visit. Maybe someone told you about it, maybe you stumbled across a photo of the coastline, maybe you just like the idea of going somewhere that isn’t completely overrun by August tourists. Whatever the reason — May and June 2026 are your window. And this year, there’s actually a lot going on.

Here’s what’s happening across Istria over the next couple of months, and why any one of these is a good enough excuse to finally book the trip.

VINISTRA WINE FAIR — 8–10 MAY, POREČ

Istria is serious about wine. Not in a pretentious, swirling-a-glass-while-staring-into-the-middle-distance way — in a genuine, this-is-what-we-do-here way. Vinistra is one of the largest wine events in Croatia, bringing together over 100 exhibitors of local wines, olive oils, brandies and spirits. It’s open to the public, the tastings are right there, and Poreč is a stunning place to spend a weekend regardless of what’s in your glass.

DAY OF OPEN WINE CELLARS — LAST SUNDAY OF MAY

If Vinistra is the formal occasion, Open Wine Cellars Day is the after-party. On the last Sunday of May, around 70 Istrian winemakers open their cellars to the public — and the tastings are free. You drive (or ideally, don’t drive) through the Istrian countryside stopping at winemakers, tasting what they have, and generally spending a Sunday in exactly the way Sundays were intended to be spent. Details on participating wineries are available through local tourist offices.

SEA STAR FESTIVAL — 28–31 MAY, UMAG

Right on the Stella Maris lagoon in Umag, Sea Star is Croatia’s unofficial start-of-summer signal. Four days of music across multiple stages — electronic, hip-hop, pop, rock — with the Adriatic as your backdrop. Previous editions have drawn tens of thousands of visitors from across Europe, and the lineup consistently punches well above what you’d expect for a festival of this size and location. If you’re planning to attend, accommodation in and around Umag fills up fast. Book early.

LIGHTHOUSE FESTIVAL — 3–7 JUNE, NEAR POREČ

For those who prefer their music underground and their festival settings genuinely unusual: Lighthouse takes place on the Lanterna peninsula near Poreč, which is entirely closed off to non-festival guests during the event. Four days of electronic music, an intimate crowd, and a setting that most festivals would kill for. It’s a very different vibe to Sea Star — smaller, more focused, properly good if electronic music is your thing.

CROATIAN SUMMER SALSA FESTIVAL — 8–15 JUNE, ROVINJ

Rovinj in June is already one of the more beautiful places on the Adriatic. Add a week of salsa, bachata and kizomba workshops, seaside dance parties and international instructors, and you’ve got a week that’s genuinely hard to argue with. Whether you can actually dance or are just hoping to learn enough to not embarrass yourself, this is the kind of event that turns a short break into a proper memory.

Why Istria events in May 2026 are worth your time

All of the above happens against a backdrop of warm weather, uncrowded beaches, open restaurants, and roads that are actually driveable. May and June in Istria are what summer in Istria looks like before summer in Istria becomes a logistical problem. The sea is warm enough to swim in, the towns are charming rather than heaving, and you can get a table at a good restaurant without planning it three weeks in advance.

If you’ve been waiting for a reason to visit — this is several of them, all at once.
